Let’s be totally honest here, who gives a crap about the Oscars? I mean yes, the pageantry in nice and it’s cool to see performers get rewarded for their hard work. It’s nice to see achievement brought to those who provided us entertainment. But, is that what are the Oscars are all about?
The largest benefactors from the Oscars are the studios. The Oscars serve as a ranking and help the studios pull talent. This year Warner Bros. swept with 10 Oscars wins placing it far in front of 20th Century Fox, which came in second at 3 wins. How will this play out? I for one am very interested to see.
Disney, with two wins both for the movie Frozen, seems posed to dominate the summer box office. With diminishing domestic ticket sales year after year, summer proves to be the time in which the studios can really rake in the cash. Disney makes a killing with their Marvel franchise but Warner Bros. hopes to close that gap with their upcoming Batman Vs. Super man flick.
Batman Vs. Superman is set to be released in 2015, which gives them a year to build up to it’s release. Disney was able to build up The Avengers making it the third highest earning movie of all time. To compete with this Warner Bros. is hoping to cash in on the comic book market with its DC comics catalog. Superman has always proven a tough sale but Batman has sucked in the cash time and time again. Yes I know all I talk about is comic book movies, but let’s be honest that’s all you really care about.
With all the wins yesterday Warner Bros. should be able to get some good directors and some great talent to helm with upcoming projects. If they’re smart they will finally go ahead with a Wonder Woman movie.
